“Margaro”

a legendary mother figure from Mykonos island, an old grocery store and lots of frying pans! back in 1942 Margaro used to feed the port workers on her famous braised meat every Sunday. since then the traditional tavern has slightly been transformed. now offers the ultimate threesome! a naughty three dish menu lost in the mists of time.

a pure, fresh Greek salad, some oil sizzling golden red mullets and some crunchy shrimp bites of heaven! that’s it you hotties. occasionally some fresh crayfish or sea bream will enter the game.

dark dangerous waters, shipwrecks, gold coins and untold treasures. i would definitely survive all evil just to gulp some all time mama’s classics. in a picturesque alley in Karystos since 1897 “cavo d’oro”(named after the cape on the southeastern tip of Evia island) is offering the clearest window view to homemade Greek dishes. gawk at, sniff around; just feel it.

there, at this precious grandpa’s inheritance, you can taste some smooth boiled zucchini, some sweet Greek style peas(cooked in olive oil), some gently braised okra, some nasty stuffed zucchini in creamy egg-lemon sauce, a sinful tas kebap(stewed beef) with kourkoubines(local pasta), some tangy pork medallions in lemon sauce with kourkoubines- again and again – and a little bit of childhood; spaghetti bolognese.

sweet Despina will gladly arrange an organic feast for your bellies only. a bright colourful salad, some crispy fried eggplant slices, a soft flavourful local cheese called malachto, some juicy meatballs and the most comforting goodness of all, the fancy froutalia omelet(potato, sausage, volaki cheese & pork fat). my happiness is yelling louder than our noisy poultry fellas!

a whitewashed house, a picturesque yard, a spiritual church and a narrow paved stair path. typical Cycladic beauty ideally captured by Henri Cartier-Bresson. back in 1876 two grannies inhabited a cute little place facing the Madonna church they faithfully took care of. passing it on to their beloved Maria a miracle happened! at first it was pastry and then meze(a kind of Greek tapas). “mosaico”(from the floor artwork) now owned by Maria’s son George, is wise; traditionally speaking.

have a summery baked eggplant in homemade tomato sauce and feta cheese, some sexy ginger flavored potatoes, a tender octopus, a juicy down-home Greek sausage, some fried chicken bites of heaven, some fried pork bites of love and some fine small grilled pork steaks. you might even get lucky and get yourself a treat; dolma aka traditional Greek stuffed goodies!

Eleni Filippa is an artist; a devoted santouri(traditional Greek instrument) player. just do the math now. a food lover she is. “almyra”(means saltiness) is a cute seaside place at Megali Ammos beach in Kythnos island. a purifying setting made of sea, sand and some colorful director’s chairs. no harm in being just an extra in this scene.

there you can taste some aromatic ravioli di magro(cheese filled) with butter and sage, a slick beef fillet with green peppers and of course the Bellagio typical, a mouthful, gently fried perch fillet risotto – the original boiled rice version you can find at chef Aurelio’s other family run place, “trattoria San Giacomo“. locals know best!
