must-try threesome..

a legendary mother figure from Mykonos island, an old grocery store and lots of frying pans! back in 1942 Margaro used to feed the port workers on her famous braised meat every Sunday. since then the traditional tavern has slightly been transformed. now offers the ultimate threesome! a naughty three dish menu lost in the mists of time.

battle of the seafood..

“at them” shouted general Miltiades. the famous battle of Marathon has just begun. a historic and inspiring place, northeast of Athens; a golden coast, an artificial lake, a monumental tomb and a seaside fish tavern. “Isidora”(mom’s name), a plain trail to the blue sea, offers some good old Greek delicacies for more than fifty years. it’s mama’s army, all right!

it’s a family affair..

family and tradition are really important in Greece. so is good food! a wise person should easily understand that such a combination would be rather successful. and it is my friends. that is exactly the case of a small fish tavern, running for more than 55 years now, in a southwestern part of Athens.

at “kanaria” almost nothing has changed; the sun still shines its heartwarming light over the green yard, the old mosaic floor still welcomes the numerous guests and the lingering kitchen smells still whet everyone’s appetite. the menu is quite clear, a simple yet flavorful tomato or cabbage salad, some fleshy olives, some masterfully pan fried shrimps or red mullets and of course fresh fish from Cyclades.

i just want you to remember two things; perfectly cooked prawns do exist and Greek olive oil is the finest of them all! trust me. you will not find any wine labels there, just the wine coming out from the barrels.

“papadakis” a true fish story..

i cannot really count the times i have been to this restaurant. i mean i know the menu by heart! this place started in the famous Greek island of Paros and about a decade after, it moved to the center of Athens. the neighborhood is really quite and i enjoy sitting outdoors. the cuisine is of course Greek, emphasizing on fish and seafood dishes. that does not mean that you cannot find some excellent meat also. along with her husband and their delightful daughter, famous Argiro; one of the best chefs around, does an excellent job running this place! my favorite plates are spicy shrimps with feta cheese and chili peppers, seaweed with mushrooms, linguini with shrimps(i always ask for extra spicy), mussels and clams. there are also some signature ones, like the octopus with potato sticks, the slowly cooked chickpea soup and fava with sardines. of course you cannot leave without trying the luscious desserts like the pie with sweet cream called “bougatsa” in Greek and the mille-feuille. so, visit “papadakis” and choose your own ending because after all, there is nothing like a true fish story! right?

“psariston” fish gets excellent grades..

let’s be honest; when you are in Greece, you expect to find fresh fish and seafood in general. since summer is still on, why not smell and taste it also? i recently visited a restaurant which is a common secret amongst fish connoisseurs! judging by the name of this place you should expect dishes of fish with highest praise; “psariston” is a compound Greek word which literally means the excellent fish! and that is exactly what this restaurant serves my friends. i dare you to try every single delicacy that Vasilis Akrivos and his team can serve you. choose from eel, clams, oysters, shrimps, crayfish, octopus, sole and many more. also taste one of the most delicious recipes around; noodles with eel, sun dried tomatoes and basil oil. i also recommend the spicy clams, the shrimps with truffle and of course the soups. it is true that i have not still mentioned anything about the environment. well just imagine a Greek island and you will easily get the idea. so go check this interesting place and rate it yourselves, but remember “excellent” is the highest grade!
